A worrying number of young Australians have given up on ever owning their home, a new survey has found.
A Resolve Political Monitor poll published on Monday showed 54 per cent of respondents on middle incomes and 63 per cent in the low income bracket think they will never be able to afford their own home.
Property expert Michael Yardney said he was not surprised by how many people had abandoned hope of becoming a homeowner given the average price of homes.
An astonishing two-thirds of young Australians have given up on ever owning their own home, a shock new survey has revealed
'There is no doubt that it is harder for first time buyers to get into the property market at present,' he told Daily Mail Australia.
National house and unit prices together in March rose by 0.6 per cent to $704,723, CoreLogic data showed.
Sydney's median house prices last month rose by 1.5 per cent to $1,230,581 as Melbourne's equivalent value edged up by 0.6 per cent to $898,644.
Housing in all five of Australia's major cities has been considered 'severely unaffordable' since the turn of the century, according to the 2023 Demographia International Housing Affordability Scheme.

The Resolve Political Monitor survey, published in , revealed the situation has become so bad there are now concerns the housing market is having a negative impact on the entire economy, affecting cities, governments and the Australian way of life.
Living standards and productivity are harmed by the property sector taking a growing proportion of people's incomes, experts fear.
This, in turn, evDEN eVE nAKliYAt can change how businesses and employees make key economic choices - such as people whose skills are needed moving away from where those jobs are because they can't afford to live there.
Ten straight interest rate rises from May 2022 to March 2023 have already made home ownership more difficult, and this was compounded by property prices rising last month for the first time in 10 months.
Since 2005, the median house price in Sydney and Melbourne has increased by 3.5 times the inflation rate and 2.5 times the increase in average weekly earnings.
Jim Reed, director of Resolve, said high house prices and rents meant younger people were being discouraged from entering the real estate market.
'Many young people have simply given up on the dream of owning a home, at least in their early careers, and some are even telling me that they are giving up on having a family because they can't afford to look after themselves, let alone more mouths,' he said.

Mr Yardney maintained hope residents would still be able to afford a home, as long as they worked hard to save.
'There is nothing new about this,' he said.
'I remember after property prices increased from the late 1980s that parents said their children will never be able to afford a house, and look what's happened since.'
Economist Saul Eslake, who has long been a critic of Australia's housing policy, said the situation has become so bad it is undermining the living standards of coming generations.
'I don't understand why younger people today aren't out on the streets, protesting against their parents and eVdEN EvE NaKLiyat their grandparents for what they've done to the cost of housing in this country,' he said.
An Australian on an average salary wanting a house is now almost locked out of the inner cities or towns near the beach unless they are prepared to live in a flood zone.
Financial comparison Canstar calculated someone on an average, full-time salary of $94,000, would only be able to borrow $436,000.
If the prospective homebuyer was able to raise a 20 per cent deposit of $109,000, they would therefore only be able to buy a house or unit worth $545,000.
That is less than half Sydney's median house price of $1,217,308, even after a fall of 14. They are also priced out of Melbourne where $897,222 is the median house price, after an 11.2 per cent drop, evDEN eVe NAkLiyat along with Brisbane where $767,781 is the mid-point, following an 8.6 per cent decline.
JOHANNESBURG (AP) - South Africa may delay shutting down many of its highly polluting coal-fired power stations, President Cyril Ramaphosa said Monday, a move that could stem a but would slow a shift to greener energy sources.
South Africa is Africa's most developed economy but is experiencing rolling nationwide blackouts, sometimes for more than 10 hours a day, because of an electricity shortfall.
The blackouts, which have become worse over the past year, have been deeply damaging to the economy and to ahead of national elections next year.
Under the new plan, which Ramaphosa outlined only broadly in his weekly letter to the nation, eVDEN Eve NakliyAT South Africa will consider a delay in the decommissioning of some of its 14 coal plants to help ease the electricity cuts, known as "load-shedding."
About 80% of South Africa's electricity is provided by coal.
The nation is the world's 16th-largest emitter of greenhouse gases overall, at about 1.13% of global emissions, and 45th per capita based on 2019 data, according to ClimateWatch.
"In some cases, it may be necessary to re-examine the timeframe and the process of decommissioning or mothballing of coal-fired power stations temporarily to address our electricity supply shortfall," Ramaphosa wrote.
"Few would argue that we should close down power stations even as we experience load-shedding."
The blackouts are cutting electricity to South African homes and EVDEn eVE NAkliYAt businesses and its 60 million people several times a day, usually in two-hour blocks.
Ramaphosa wrote that South Africa was still committed to the world´s climate targets but had to balance that with its energy security requirements and the immediate priority of ending, or at least reducing, the power cuts.
He pointed out that to address short-term energy supply problems.
"A number of countries in Europe that had decommissioned or mothballed their fossil fuelled power stations to address the current energy shortage as a result of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia," Ramaphosa wrote.
Extending the life of the coal stations would throw scrutiny on South Africa´s Just Energy Transition policy, for which it has already received pledges of $8.5 billion from the United States, Britain, France, Germany and the European Union to help phase out fossil fuels.
Under the policy, South Africa has committed to reducing its reliance on coal for its electricity by at least 50% by 2035.
If you have any queries relating to the place and how to use EVdEn EvE nAKliyAt, you can get in touch with us at the webpage. It says it will need at least $84 billion to complete the transition to "net zero" carbon emissions from its electricity generation by 2050.
The coal stations, which are run by the state-owned power utility, Eskom, are by far the largest emitters of pollutants in South Africa.
Since 1959, South Africa has put nearly 18.6 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide into the air, ranking 13th among nations, eVDEn EVE nakliyAT according to Global Carbon Project, a group of scientists that track national emissions.
Many of the stations are old and inefficient and experience regular breakdowns.
That, EVdEn eVe NaKliYat combined with years of mismanagement and corruption at Eskom, has left South Africa operating with a daily electricity deficit of about 6,000 megawatts.
That may increase with electricity demand expected to peak in the winter months of June and July and experts and government officials have warned that the country faces a testing winter season. The country has managed to add some electricity from renewable energy sources like wind and solar but it is not nearly enough.
South African energy expert Chris Yelland said Ramaphosa´s statement on delaying the decommissioning of the power stations was in contradiction to several policy decisions and Eskom´s own operational plans to decommission the plants.
He said extending the lifespans of coal plants could require South Africa to change some of its laws, including the Air Quality Act, evDen eve NAkliyAt which has specific targets for the improvement of air quality.
But Ramaphosa and his ruling African National Congress party were under political pressure to find a solution to the damaging electricity crisis ahead of elections next year, Yelland said.
"There is now a kind of desperation and political pressure as South Africans are really fed up with load-shedding, so they (Ramaphosa and the ANC) need to be seen to be doing something in the short-term," Yelland said.
"Load-shedding on its own can have a huge impact on the outcome of the upcoming elections."
Newly appointed electricity minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said last week that the situation was so dire that the government was even considering reinvesting in some of the coal stations to extend their lifespan.
Ramaphosa wrote that "the process of re-examining our timeframes is not a reversal of our position on the just energy transition."
One coal station, the Komati Power Station in the Mpumalanga province, was decommissioned earlier this year and will be converted into a renewable energy site with wind, solar and storage batteries.

New Zealand is home to ten Great Walks.
Out of those ten, the Milford Track is arguably the most iconic. It is the one which evokes images of cascading waterfalls and lush green peaks in your mind's eye. It's a bucket-list multi-day hike for both New Zealanders and intrepid tourists alike.
Situated in the stunning Fiordland National Park, the Milford Track is 53.5 km (33.2 miles) in length and it will take four days to complete.
Starting from Glade Wharf, Lake Te Anau and winding its way to Sandfly Point in Milford Sound, you will encounter nature at its best, a cacophony of colour, sound and scenery so potent it will leave you speechless.
1. Choose wisely what time of year to walk the
Fiordland is notorious for its unpredictable weather.
Choosing the right time of the year to walk it can save you from some of its extremes. The New Zealand hiking season generally runs from spring through to autumn (October to May). We don't recommend taking it on in winter due to the avalanche and flooding risk.
2.
Decide whether to go with a guided group or take it on alone
A big decision when committing to this stunning multi-day hike is whether to DIY it or join a guided group. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Opt to go it alone and it will be less demanding on your wallet, however it won't be less taxing on your brain as you will have to organise all the logistics for yourself.
This includes organising your own transportation, accommodation and carrying your own supplies. Do it as part of a guided group and EvdEn eVe nAKliYaT all of this is taken care of for you.
Keep in mind, if you are going to organise it yourself, you will need to book the Milford Track at least a year in advance.
A great resource for the independent hiker is the DOC (Department of Conservation) office. There, EVdEn eVE NAkliyaT you will get maps and all the advice you will ever need.
Milford Track is a one way track. That means that if you're not booking onto a guided tour, you'll need to prebook buses from Te Anau and your boat ticket from Sandfly Point back to Milford.
3. Get ready to experience backcountry huts in all their glory
No multi-day walk in New Zealand would be complete without a night in a backcountry hut. You'll spend three nights sleeping in DOC huts (shelters made for hikers out in the backcountry) while out on your adventure.
Freedom camping is not permitted inside Fiordland National Park. The huts along Milford Track are Clinton Hut, Mintaro Hut and Dumpling Hut. They'll fit up to 40 people and have communal kitchens, mattresses to sleep on and usually a log or EVdEn EVE nAKLiyaT coal burner. There's electricity which switches off once night falls.
What they do not have is showers or blankets so bring a warm change of clothes and your sleeping bag!
4. Pack carefully and carry everything you need!
There are no shops or towns once you set foot on this ; you will be completely immersed in nature.
If you want to see more regarding EvDEn evE NakliYat visit the web-site. This means you will also be totally self-reliant so carry what you need for the duration of the trip. This includes all of your food supplies for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for the four days. The good news is there is plenty of water on the track so at least you won't have to lug litres and litres of water around.
Another item for your packing list is a decent waterproof jacket. Fiordland is the wettest place in New Zealand, getting 182 rain days a year on average. On a positive note, rainfall makes Milford even more beautiful, if that's even possible!
As long as you come prepared, it should not hinder your enjoyment of this natural nirvana in the slightest.
On a side note, if you are familiar with New Zealand, you may have heard of those pesky blighters known as sandflies. According to Maori legend, eVDEN eVE NaKliYAT the gods who created this stunning haven worried that it was so beautiful that humans would never leave.
To stop that from happening, they introduced sandflies to the area! They are not poisonous but they do bite so make sure to pack insect repellent!
You'll need roughly a 60 litre backpack to carry all of your supplies.
Between your food, sleeping bag, cooking utensils and toiletries, there is a lot of stuff involved in being self-sufficient!
5. Have your camera ready!
Milford Track is one of the most beautiful tracks in the world, so have your camera (and plenty of spare batteries) ready at all times.
The closer you get to Milford Sound itself, the more stunning the scenery becomes. Day three is a particular highlight. You'll hike over the Mackinnon Pass and enjoy insane views of the valley below with its endless jagged peaks. You'll feel like you are in another world!
A particular highlight on the descent is the 580 metre (1904ft) Sutherland Falls, one of New Zealand's highest waterfalls. On your final day of the trek, you'll enter Milford Sound itself and your jaw will drop in awe. You have reached paradise.
